Japan Has the World's Smallest Newborn Baby

In August 2018, a baby boy was born in Japan weighing just 268 grams (9.45 ounces). This makes him the smallest newborn baby ever recorded. The baby, who has not been named, was born by emergency Caesarean section at 24 weeks and 5 days of pregnancy. His mother, Toshiko Sekiya, had been diagnosed with preeclampsia, a condition that can cause high blood pressure and other complications in pregnancy.

The baby was so small that he could fit into a pair of cupped hands. He was placed in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and given round-the-clock care. He had to be fed through a tube and had difficulty breathing on his own.

Despite the challenges, the baby made a remarkable recovery. He was released from the hospital after six months, weighing 3.2 kilograms (7 pounds). He is now a healthy and thriving toddler.
